tom hanks apologizes…
We think it’s a good thing that Tom Hanks has apologized for his statements about how the Mormans were behind some kind of vast “unamerican” conspiracy in support of cali’s prop 8. To start with, Hanks needs to realize that in the American psyche, he’s largely considered above politics. He’s very much a Jimmy Stewart or Lucille Ball-like figure, popular with all groups and sub-groups in this country. Honestly, it’s traumatic for every American when the star of Big delves into current events and singles out a long-maligned American religious minority as “unamerican.”
Because black Californians voted heavily in favor of prop 8, the fabulous La Shawn Barber asks an amazingly brash rhetorical question “Will Tom Hanks Call Blacks Un-American?” (Note: We currently have La Shawn listed in the “min con” link category; however, if she keeps issuing such uncomfortable questions, we might need to reassign this gal with gall to the “diva con” roll.)
Well, to answer Barber’s question, no. Unlike gays or blacks, the Mormons are not one of the left’s extra special victimized pet groups, so it’s perfectly okay to criticize Mormons, make trite and predictable jokes about Mormons and polygamy, scoff at Mormon missionaries, mock their religious beliefs, etc. Mormons are one of the most marginalized groups in America. But, unlike other marginalized groups, Mormons overwhelmingly vote RethugliKKKan and bravely refuse to claim victim status - which makes them a favorite target of the left.
Libraries have been written about this country’s oppression of blacks and American indians. In all reason, Mormons should be included on that list. But that’s not going to happen. Because, as noted above, the Mormons refuse to play victim and refuse to vote for the left.
And that’s why the dumb gay herd went after the Mormons. The drama queens needed a vulnerable group to scapegoat after a state overflowing with Democratic pet groups voted heavily for a black president - but shot down gay marriage.
